The Science Corps (Chamd) was a unit in the “Hagana” organization, and later in the IDF, composed of scientists and engineers and dealing with a variety of military issues requiring knowledge in various scientific fields. The unit was established with the active support of David Ben-Gurion, who supported the idea that Israel’s wars would be decided by the “Jewish genius”. The Science Corps is considered to be the beginning of the extensive development of military technology in Israel, which led to the establishment of factories including Rafael and the Military Industries (MIA). The unit’s graduates became leading figures in the development of science in Israel.
