During the First Lebanon War (Operation “Peace for Galilee”, 1982), there was close strategic and military cooperation between Israel and the “Lebanese Forces” – a Christian militia that was the main military wing of the Christian camp in the Lebanese Civil War.

  • The goal of the partnership: Israel, led by Defense Minister Ariel Sharon, sought to install Bashir Gemayel, the leader of the Christians, as president of Lebanon, and to expel the Syrian army and the Palestinian terrorist organizations (PLO) from Lebanon.
  • Military cooperation: The Lebanese Forces assisted the IDF with intelligence information and combat operations, mainly in the Beirut and Mount Lebanon areas. At the same time, Israel intensified its military assistance to the Christian camp.
  • The advance to Beirut: While the IDF advanced north, the Lebanese Forces worked to take control of Muslim and non-Christian territories, sometimes under the cover of Israeli fighting.
  • Bashir Gemayel: His planned rise to power was interrupted by his assassination in September 1982, an event that changed the course of the war and led to the IDF entering West Beirut.
  • Sabra and Shatila massacre: After Gemayel’s assassination, the IDF entered the Lebanese forces into the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps, where militiamen massacred the Palestinian civilian population.
  • Results: The partnership did not achieve its long-term goal, as the Christian government failed to stabilize the country, and the Lebanese forces became one of many factors in the internal conflict in Lebanon, becoming entangled in the Lebanese quagmire along with Israel.

At the same time, the regular Lebanese army was not actively involved in fighting against Israel, while the IDF focused on fighting against Palestinian terrorists and the Syrian army.

Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar from Hampden-Sydney College, is credited with discovering the source behind the ubiquitous filler text. In seeing a sample of lorem ipsum, his interest was piqued by consectetur—a genuine, albeit rare, Latin word. Consulting a Latin dictionary led McClintock to a passage from De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum On the Extremes of Good and Evil, a first-century B.C. text from the Roman.

Carried only by professionals

So when is it okay to use lorem ipsum? First, lorem ipsum works well for staging. It’s like the props in a furniture store—filler text makes it look like someone is home. The same Wordpress template might eventually be home to a fitness blog, a photography website, or the online journal of a cupcake fanatic. Lorem ipsum helps them imagine what the lived-in website might look like.
