Its first commander was Yitzhak Sadeh, who was also the commander of the Palmach and was later considered the father of the armored corps.

Role of the service: The “Shamsh” was established to unify the handling of armored vehicles, which had been scattered until then among various units and organizations. Its role included planning, acquisition, production (protecting trucks) and operating the armored force.

Activity in the war: Its main activity at this stage was in securing roads and convoys (such as the convoys to Jerusalem) using “sandwich armored vehicles”.

• The transition to the Armored Brigade: On May 31, 1948, with the establishment of the IDF, the 8th Brigade was established as the first armored brigade, and grew out of the foundations laid by the Armored Service.

The Armored Service (AS) used a variety of vehicles, from local improvisations to standard military procurement. The main vehicles were:

“Sandwich” armored vehicles: These were regular trucks protected by double steel plates with wooden plates between them (hence the name “sandwich”). They were mainly used to escort convoys on attacked roads, such as the road to Jerusalem.

“Butterfly” armored vehicle: A more advanced version of the escort armored vehicle, in which the fighting compartment and driver were combined into one space. It was named for the roof doors that opened to the sides and resembled butterfly wings.

“White” armored vehicle (White Scout Car): An armored reconnaissance vehicle made in the United States that was used by the British Army. Some were purchased or looted, and were among the first professional tools of the service.

• Tracked vehicles (armored caterpillars): Half-tracked vehicles (models M2 and M3) that arrived mainly as army surplus from the US and Europe. They became the backbone of the armored brigades that were later established.

Armored vehicles captured: During the battles, the service captured British-made armored vehicles that were used by the Arab armies, such as the “Otter” and the “Humber”.

[596,382,399,401,404,407,408,409,435

0":"post-6261","1":"product","2":"type-product","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"product_cat-sort-items","7":"product_cat-badge-pin","8":"product_cat-pre-state-of-israel-2","9":"product_cat-hagana-the-defense","10":"product_cat-war-of-independence-insignia","11":"product_cat-security-rescue-forces","12":"product_cat-idf-3","13":"product_cat-land-forces","14":"product_cat-armored","16":"first","17":"outofstock","18":"shipping-taxable","19":"purchasable","20":"product-type-simple
["GET
