In July 1921, the &#8220;Superior Police&#8221;, also known as the &#8220;Palestinian Gendarmerie&#8221;, was established, to which the people of the country were recruited under British command. In 1922, a similar force was established called the &#8220;British Gendarmerie&#8221;, which included about eight hundred British policemen, veterans of the Royal Irish Constabulary. The forces were employed as a riot prevention force, and in the fight against gangs of robbers who were still active in the country. Their operation was successful, and towards the end of Herbert Samuel&#8217;s term as High Commissioner, one could feel a relative calm compared to the situation before the gendarmerie was activated.
