The Veterans Alliance (or its full name: Alliance of World War II Veterans Who Fought the Nazis) is the association representing Jewish fighters who fought in the ranks of the Allied armies (mainly the Red Army), in partisan units and in the underground against Nazi Germany.<\/li>\n
Below are key details about the organization and its activities:<\/li>\n
Purpose and establishment: The organization was established in 1977 with the aim of recognizing the heroism of Jewish fighters and ensuring their rights. With waves of immigration from the former Soviet Union in the 1990s, the organization grew significantly and led to the enactment of the “World War II Veterans Status Law” (2000), which grants Lutherans financial benefits, rental assistance and discounts on medications.<\/li>\n
Leadership: Until his death in April 2024, the organization was headed by Abraham Greenzeid, who was a key figure in preserving the legacy of the fighters and achieving state recognition for them.<\/li>\n
Activities and commemoration:<\/li>\n
o Victory Day (May 9): The organization leads the “Victory Day over Nazi Germany” events in Israel, which include marches (and veterans in uniforms adorned with medals) and state ceremonies, the main one being at Yad Vashem.<\/li>\n
o Museums and branches: There are dozens of branches throughout the country (about 48) that work for the welfare of veterans. In addition, there are museums dedicated to commemorating their legacy in cities such as Nesher (the Yuri Stern Veterans Museum) and Ariel.<\/li>\n
