The Gendarmerie in Israel
After the events of 1917, the British Mandate authorities came to the conclusion that the existing police force could not carry out tasks of maintaining peace and preventing riots. In July 1921, the “Superior Police”, also known as the “Palestinian Gendarmerie”, was established, to which the people of the country were recruited under British command. In 1922, a similar force was established called the “British Gendarmerie”, which included about eight hundred British policemen, veterans of the Royal Irish Constabulary. The forces were employed as a riot prevention force, and in the fight against gangs of robbers who were still active in the country. Their operation was successful, and towards the end of Herbert Samuel’s term as High Commissioner, one could feel a relative calm compared to the situation before the gendarmerie was activated. Samuel’s successor, Herbert Plumer, disbanded both gendarmerie in 1926
